In Boston’s letters, we also find a rare glimpse of a rare view of the Custer half-siblings who are rarely, if ever, mentioned by Custer biographers. The conventional wisdom is that the Monroe Custers had little or no contact with the family of their half brother Brice William Custer, Emanuel’s son by his earlier marriage to Matilda Viers, whom we first met in Chapter Two. However, Boston seems to have known them intimately. In his October 14, 1874, letter to Emma Reed, he mentions Brice, as well as “Ry” Custer and “Marvy” Custer, who are presumably Maria Stockton Custer and Marvin Samuel Custer, Brice’s wife and son. Apparently, Boston had lived with Brice for an extended time, as had Marvy in the home of Emanuel and Maria.
“Yesterday I received a letter from Ry Custer saying she wanted me to pay for my board at once as she heard from the General that I was in Dakota [and earning money],” Boston wrote. “And that she had to make a payment on her piano the first of November and said as soon as I sent her fifty dollars my board would be paid for.”
He then complains that “I don’t see how she could well ask for such a thing when she and Marvy were at our house twice and as long each time and did not pay anything which was all right but she thinks I will send it to her by Express and Brice won’t know anything about it—but I intend to write Brice saying I enclosed fifty dollars to Ry for my board.”
That relations were strained is indicated by Boston griping that Ry “had the cheek to sign herself Your loving Sister.”
As Ry wrote again in November asking for money, there was apparently no immediate resolution to this disagreement.
